Why Neshama Hospice needs funds for start up

Neshama Hospice will open its doors in less than a year, and this final stretch is critical. Before the doors can open, we must hire nurses and social workers, recruit and train volunteers, install and test equipment, and put the systems in place that make exceptional care possible.

Ontario’s Ministry of Health will contribute ONLY 50% of our annual operating costs, approximately $152,250 per bed annually. Like all hospices in Ontario, the funding for the remaining 50% of operating costs will always need to come from dedicated and generous donors such as you.

Your support is what will make Neshama Hospice a place where people are surrounded by love and supported by expert care at end-of-life—at no cost.

We need you now!

From construction to care

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our inaugural donors, fundraising for building construction of Neshama Hospice has been reached. Our purpose-built hospice residence is rising because our community chose to make it happen and committed to building a future of exceptional end-of-life care.

Now we are in the most important countdown of all: the months between a completed building and a hospice fully prepared to begin caring for residents and families. We are grateful for the dedicated donors who helped raise the walls; now we need dedicated donors to help realize the care and support that will take place inside those walls.

A building is rising. Help open the doors.

A beautiful building is not enough

Neshama Hospice’s 12-bed residence on Cadillac Avenue is a testament to what a community can accomplish together. The building reflects values we are committed to: dignity, excellence, and care for the whole person.

Delivering exceptional care — the kind of care this residence was built to hold — requires the equipment, set up, training, programs, people, and resources that only philanthropic investment can sustain. In the months ahead, there is a tremendous amount of work to be done before a single resident can be welcomed:

  • Recruiting and onboarding qualified nurses, social workers, and care aides
  • Building and training a robust volunteer community
  • Installing, testing, and calibrating medical and operational equipment
  • Establishing administrative systems, protocols, and care pathways
  • Initiating grief and bereavement, spiritual care, and integrative therapy programs
  • Equipping and setting up kitchens and family servery for sustenance and comfort

We are in our Countdown to Care: the critical months between construction completion and becoming a fully operational hospice filled with residents. Generous, visionary donors have built these walls, and we are counting on generous, visionary donors to ensure that inside them we fulfill the promise of Neshama Hospice.

By the Numbers

At end-of-life families and loved ones often become caregivers and medical managers, losing the essence of who they are to one another. We need to change that story.
